Indigenous Women Rising launches the Rain Fund,
a reimagined approach to culture and healthcare.
Indigenous Women Rising, an Indigenous-led organization that focuses on Reproductive Sovereignty, is honored to announce the RAIN FUND, a creative rebrand of the organization's successful and ongoing abortion fund. As a result of the high demand for abortion funding throughout NDN country, especially after the Dobbs decision (2022), Indigenous Women Rising has decided to re-launch this fund with the purpose and intent of representing abortion as a vital aspect of life.
“As the director of the Rain Fund for Indigenous Women Rising, I am beyond grateful to lead this essential stream of support for the community,” said Eztli Amaya. “This revamp deepens our commitment to reproductive sovereignty, rooted in cultural values, and the extension of solidarity to all people of color facing systemic injustices. “We are dedicated to uplifting Indigenous families and fostering principles that are meant for everyone to thrive,” continued Amaya.
The Rain Fund logo incorporates the “Three Sisters” symbolism, an Indigenous agricultural reference that consists of corn, squash and climbing beans. The Three Sisters symbolism is recognized for their strong bond in contributing to the growth of their neighboring seed. This concept reflects the foundation on which Indigenous Women RIsing exists: the Rain Fund is one of three funds that support Indigenous people’s sexual and reproductive health.
In the logo, the corn represents funding as a central source in which all grow and benefit from. The beans represent the protection of identity and individual stories, as beans are shielded by the corn’s leaf blades when growing to maturity. The squash are the yield of physical and emotional aspects of abortion care and for those who continue the fight for care and for those who are seeking it- squash is resilient and if taken care of thoughtfully, the plant is able to ward off pests and keep water in the ground to nourish the corn and beans.
Additionally, the rain and clouds visually represent the various understandings of what rain brings to all living beings. The symbolic purpose in the new logo focuses on the life, growth and nourishment that results from rain. This symbolism further speaks to the interpreted understanding of mourning and lamentation as all interpretations of rain align with abortion and the many emotions that arise for those who receive care.
“Indigenous Women Rising will always center Indigenous families, so we can truly realize a future of equitable access to a full range of reproductive healthcare, including abortion,” said Rachael Lorenzo, Founder & Co-Executive Director of Indigenous Women Rising.
Indigenous Women Rising is a reproductive sovereignty and sexual health organization that centers Indigenous people nationwide while rooted in their Pueblo values.
